Acne

A complex problem with a combination solution

Acne is a complex condition with varied causes. In extreme cases medication will be necessary but, in general, the skin can be brought back into balance by restoring normal populations of skin microflora.

This can be done with a combination of basic lifestyle choices and careful attention to the products that are applied to the skin.

Lifestyle Considerations

Your lifestyle can make a difference to your skin

  • Maintain acid mantle – make sure that all skincare products are pH balanced at 4.5.
  • Research has shown that the general health of your gut microbiome can also influence your skin health. By eating fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi you will improve microbial diversity in your gut.
  • Pair a good quality oral probiotic supplement with topical, live probiotics to outcompete the acne causing species.
  • Avoid the use of harsh surfactants and abrasive exfoliators. This can damage an already vulnerable skin barrier, leading to more inflammation.
  • Avoid unnecessary cleansing and over cleansing – this can stimulate your skin to produce sebum at a lower quality.
  • Avoid drying cleansers and toners with alcohol – both can impact on the health of your skin’s natural microflora.
  • Where possible, ensure you get around 15 minutes of uninterrupted, unprotected sun exposure per day – the production of Vitamin D has an underestimated effect on the skin.
